One topic that we try to emphasize here on The Industry is design processes. In fact, a series dedicated to just that begins this month! Behind every application, product, and company is a strong design (or at least there should be). After all, to the average consumer who knows nothing about the engineering process behind products, decisions on them are made solely on their functionality, look, and flow. These “check-boxes” all have something to do with design – user-interface and user-experience (UI/UX). So how is this process exemplified in the iOS world? Not much because it seems that designers often forget to share that bit of information with their customers. After pushing v1.0, the talk then begins to center around v1.1+ and no longer on the time or creativity put into the app.
However, there are the few that return to beginning of it all. There are those that decide to let us in on their workflow and design process. Such an individual is Artem Lapitski, an independent interface designer and consultant specializing in user interaction. Yesterday, he sent me a link to a design case study he authored. His message was, “maybe your readers would be interested?,” but first I had to be interested – I was. Lapitski literally tore apart his successful iOS app, Repeat Timer Pro, and showed us what he called,
“a behind-the-scenes look at the ideas and processes that went into the utility app – from concept and design to the marketing strategy and its results.”
From the idea of the app to its eventual launch, Lapitski covers it all. He goes into deep description of what happened where, what caused what, and even how the word was spread through sites like PRMac, AppAdvice (where I used to work and pitched the idea), and the DailyAppShow. Not to mention, lots of pixel-perfect pictures and images to spice up the post.
