5 Rules on How to Design like Apple

If there’s one thing Apple is known for, it’s the company’s high design aesthetic. Visible in each of their physical products, Apple holds themselves to a high standard of near perfection. It’s just one of the reasons why people will stand in lines, rain/shine/sleet/snow to drop a weeks pay on a new device.

When people want to emulate this high-level style and focus, they often quote the late founder Steve Jobs, or now Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, Jony Ive. Sometimes we simply watch or read their interviews on what gives them inspiration. But what are some of the strict rules that Apple follow with the release of every clean product? What are some guidelines that we ourselves can apply to our everyday workflow?

Recently, Emily Stewart and her video team from Online MBA released a video that clearly illustrates 5 key rules that Apple abides by when designing. Most come from Jobs himself.

Steve Jobs was a notorious perfectionist. Apple engineers and designers went through hundreds of revisions on every prototype that made it into his hands. But Jobs’ maniacal obsession paid off. No gadget on the market is as instantly recognizable nor as coveted as the latest iteration of an Apple product. The company’s dedication to sleek design and intuitive, user-friendly technology has made each iPad, iPhone and Macbook launch an enormous success.

Rule #1? “High quality design is all encompassing.” That means every detail in an interface or physical product holds equal importance. Don’t give 50% to an area simply because it won’t be in the users vantage point. Give it your all, or give it nothing. But that’s just rule #1. Check out the video for the other #4.
